About Lee Farley’s Artwork
When people see a Lee Farley painting, they typically say, “I thought it was a photo!” Their eyes widen even more when they discover that this work of art came into existence not by just a paintbrush, but with the precise strokes of tiny, razor-sharp objects. They discover the wonder of scratchboard.
A scratchboard creation begins with a piece of clayboard in either white or black. On white boards, Lee first adds black and colored ink. He creates the drawing by scraping lines with X-Acto knives and other tools with tiny, very sharp tips.
On a black board, he applies those tools to expose the white surface underneath. He adds color later in the white, scraped-off areas.
Paintings typically require hundreds of hours of concentrated work. And Lee delights in every minute!
Most Lee Farley paintings are incredibly realistic portrayals of nature. His works are also infused with love, joy, and gratitude to God for this amazing gift.
In addition to paintings, Lee’s creations have graced the covers of brochures, annual reports, and posters. His talent appears on all kinds of surfaces, from T-shirts to a baptismal background to a six-panel mural for ABB Inc. in South Boston, Virginia. He has illustrated articles for national magazines such as Law Practice Magazine.
